Dr. Sikes with his true love, Webber. Webber belongs to Dr. Sikes' neighbor at Rehoboth Beach.
ABOUT MEBorn April 27, 1946 in Meadville, Pennsylvania, a small town with a population of approximately 18,000. Most all my relatives were, or still are, farmers and blue collar workers. There I developed the small-town traits I cherish today. My family had little money and I worked my way through school, including professional school at Pennsylvania College of Optometry (Class of 1971). To this day, money does not mean that much to me. It is not my driving force in life. I love working with people to help them achieve their vision and intellectual potential. “Vision is intelligence…” as Dr. Getman stated. I currently refuse to join HMOs and other “eye” care plans because I refuse to sacrifice the quality of my current vision exams for what they consider an adequate eye exam. I want to be able to practice my way to better benefit my patients. I want to keep making available the best treatment methods and programs for each patient's needs without a gatekeeper or insurance company (which know hardly anything about Developmental Behavioral Optometry - DBO) possibly tempting or pressuring me to use a less costly and effective treatment program. I am honestly and in all sincerity not cut out that way. I have to live with myself and I highly value my professional knowledge and integrity. At the end of each exam, I evaluate the collected data, and tell the patient honestly what I would do for myself or a loved one if I had their visual system. I desire this same honesty in others whose services I use. BiographyB.A. Edinboro State College, PA; B.S., O.D., Pennsylvania College of Optometry; Member of College of Optometrists in Vision Development (C.O.V.D.), the Optometric Extension Program (OEP), American Optometric Association (AOA), and the Northern Virginia Optometric Society (NVOS). Army optometrist Fort Belvoir, VA. 1971-73. I have taken and continue to take and participate in post graduate courses, seminars, etc. in my chosen field of D-B-O. I have taken courses from a naturopath, studied iridology, reflexology, and many other different holistic “ologies.” I am a member of Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E., study Soulcraft and other spiritual sources and read extensively on nutrition so I can apply it to vision and whole body enhancement. I believe in alternative-complimentary treatment of the vision system when applicable. I have presented many papers on Visual Training Therapy(VTT) techniques or expanded upon current VTT procedures at VTT Symposiums and I was appointed for one year to the Virginia Optometric Association Task Force on Learning Disabilities.
